Currency Exchanges 1350-1800 (Metz)

The Currency Exchange (Metz) data set reconstructs monies of account for 29 cities and regions in Europe, mainly from the Lower Rhine region, and their changes in value, expressed in gold or silver equivalents, over the period indicated. The fine weight equivalents of the monies of account are meant to provide basic data for converting nominal price figures from the period into grams of precious metal, but also serve as measures of the values of the monies of account themselves.

For a detailed explanation of this data, see Rainer Metz, Geld, Währung und Preisentwicklung: der Niederrheinraum im europäischen Vergleich, 1350-1800 (Frankfurt am Main, 1990), especially pp. xix-xxxvii (English-language summary) and pp. 1-40. For additional information about monies of account and their equivalencies, see the data set named Currency Exchange (Spufford).

Data taken from Rainer Metz, Geld, Währung und Preisentwicklung: der Niederrheinraum im europäischen Vergleich, 1350-1800 (Frankfurt am Main, 1990) are noted as "Metz [A]" followed by a reference to the table, graph, and page where the information appears). Data contributed directly by Dr. Metz to MEMDB, and not published elsewhere, contain a full citation or other information at the beginning of the note to each set of currency exchanges.
